Barbara McCray grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and journeyed north as a teenager to join her family and find work. She began working for the Goldberg family in the 1940s and quickly became a cherished part of their family, eventually touching the lives of four generations. Barbara had very little formal education, but what she knew and what she taught the family was beyond measure. Following the death of their dear friend in 2001, the Goldbergs created a fund in her honor to provide scholarships to African American college-bound students from the Milwaukee area.
