The Greater Milwaukee Foundation Violence Prevention Fund was established to support the violence prevention efforts in the City of Milwaukee through the Office of Violence Prevention. The Office of Violence Prevention provides strategic direction and oversight for City efforts to reduce risk of violence through linked strategies in partnership with government, non-profit, neighborhood, and faith organizations.
Community-wide prevention is the most effective, long-term solution to violence, and the Office of Violence Prevention engages a wide range of partners to facilitate a multidisciplinary, population-level approach to influence the social, behavioral, and environmental factors that contribute to violence. Continuing its longtime commitment to healthy neighborhoods, the Foundation will seed the new community fund with an initial grant of $200,000 and invites individuals, foundations and community partners to join in support. While the initial funding is designed to provide a timely response in Sherman Park, the Foundation and other philanthropic partners have been deeply engaged in supporting resident-led neighborhood improvement efforts across the city. This fund is the next step in unifying longer-term improvements.
